A small genus of medium-sized ichneumons whose larvae are parasitoids of sawflies. The adults commonly visit umbels.

Both sexes are black with yellow or orange bands on the legs, and a yellow to red band over 3 or 4 segments near the base of the metasoma. The thorax, including the scutellum, is always black. Identification can be confirmed by the small finger-shaped horn between the bases of the antennae, and the rhombic areolet in the fore-wing with a zig-zag in rthe vein behind and a yellowish stigma. The metasoma tapers smoothly from the widest part to the base giving a distinctive elongated tear-drop shape when viewed from above. The females have a short ovipositor.

This is probably most frequently misappled ichneumon name on the Internet. Males of a number of larger species of ichneumon have a similar colour scheme to each other (and hence are not easily identifiable) and to the present genus. People who identify ichneumons properly tend to post only what they can name, so the latter is posted but not the former. Consequently Cosmoconous becomes the most similar-looking named ichneumon to these unidentifiable males.

If the body is longer than 2cm, it’s not Cosmoconous.
If it has a yellow scutellum, it’s not Cosmoconous.
If the areolet isn’t rhombic, it’s not Cosmoconous.
If the vein behind the areolet isn’t zig-zagged, it’s not Cosmoconous.
If the stigma is black, it’s not Cosmoconous.
