Microdon analis (Macquart, 1842) (a hoverfly)

Date: 13 April 2005
Location: South Hampshire, England
State: Larva
Record Summary: Three larvae - under rotten wood
Associated organism: under fallen, rotten wood of Fagus sylvatica
Identification Notes: Dense reticulation over whole uppper surface, except pair of narrow bands.

Three larvae under very rotten wood. They had probably just left their host ants' nest to pupate, although one of the photographs shows the woodlouse, Platyarthrus hoffmannseggi, which is restricted to ants' nests. This woodlouse is particularly common with Lasius niger (s.l.?); according to Stubbs and Falk, this is the same ant used by Microdon analis.
