Introductory chapters cover observing, studying and photographing hoverflies; collecting; habitats and seasons; the early stages and the characters of adults.
The keys are very well illustrated and cover groups, genera and species of the adults. The species accounts concentrate on ecology, field craft, distribution and history of records, rather than morphology, although hints on distinguishing related species are included. Phenology of the adult is also given.
The second edition incorporates changes from the 2 updates as well as further information since them upto the closing date of June 2002 and brought the names into line with the latest checklist. he keys have also been extended to incorporate new species.

Page 94: Key to female Eupeodes: couplet 1: Front femur with MOSTLY black/pale hairs behind (E. luniger has them predominantly pale but with a few stiffer black ones.)
Page 151: couplet 8: last word on first line is "faint".
The painting of Sericomyia silentis (plate 8) shows the bars wider at the margin than they look in life.

Most of the larger species can be identified alive, but the rest must be pinned and set, with male genitalia extended in Sphaerophoria and Cheilosia. |
