Pale, thin-walled, immersed pycnidia, typically with a dark ring around the ostiole. The short conidia are short 1-septate. Ascochyta mostly cause spots on living leaves or occasionally stems.

The conidia in Septoria are much longer, while in Phyllosticta they are aseptate.
