Dumontinia tuberosa (Bull.) L.M. Kohn, 1979 (Anemone Cup)
| Notes (MWS) |
An uncommon spring discomycete. It appears as small groups of brown apothecia on long stalks growing from a buried black sclerotium. It is parasitic on Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) and occasionally on related garden plants (eg. A. blanda) where these are growing in damp places. Phillips (p275) shows it on Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) but this has not been confirmed. |
| How to find |
In the spring, check patches of Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa), especially those growing in damp places. Bare patches and stunted plants are the most promising, but it also grows amongst healthy plants.
Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) is also worth checking, as Phillips shows it on this host, and it would be interesting to confirm this. Unfortunately the two plants often grow together (especially in damp places) - and the fungus kills the host so may appear some distance from the nearest living plant. |
