CIRRIPEDIA (barnacles)

Diagnostic features The number of wall plates (4 or 6) is an important diagnostic feature for identifying acorn barnacle. Unfortunately in many species they fuse together, or merge with neighbours as the barnacle grows. These can be assumed to have 6 plates as in those with 4 (Elminius & Verruca) the plates generally remain disitnct.
