Kuehneromyces mutabilis (Schaeff.) Singer & A.H. Sm., 1946 (Sheathed Woodtuft, Velvet Tough-shank)

Notes (MWS) A conmmon brown toadstool with a ring and dark brown shaggy stipe. It grows on stumps and rotten wood of frondose trees, especially birch (*Betula*) and Beech (*Fagus*), less often conifers (eg Picea). Considered an edible species, great care must be taken to distinguish this from the rather similar Galerina marginata (Funeral Bell) which is deadly poisonous and can grow in the same habitat, although it prefers coniferous wood.
