Urocerus gigas (Linnaeus, 1758) (Greater Horntail Wasp)

Date: 16 July 2007
Location: Cardigan, Wales
State: Female imago
Record Summary: Female, in flight
Identification Notes: We spotted it flying around while we were eating lunch, caught it in a net, transferred to a tube where it waited in the shade until we'd finished lunch. I let it go on a fallen branch, hoping (but not expecting) it'd stay put for a few seconds to get a photograph. To our surprise it walked around for a minute or so, then started ovipositing in the branch.
Photo Summary: Female, close-ups and ovipositing in fallen conifer wood
