Apoderus coryli (L., 1758) (Hazel Leaf-roller Weevil)

Date: 29 June 2005
Location: Berks, England
State: Larva
Record Summary: Larva in fresh leaf roll on Hazel
Associated organism: in rolled leaf of Corylus avellana
Identification Notes: Imago emerged by 18 July.

Reared in a 1" tube, with the leaf roll opened up but crumpled near the bottom. The larva is not very mobile, especially when young, and fell to the bottom of the tube every few days, but simply turning the tube over made it drop back into the folds of the leaf.

The leaf is much more eaten and with larger holes than the small punctures you often see in similar rolls which are presumably made by Deporaus betulae. However the young larva does make small holes and surface damage in this way.
