Calyces and sterile florets

Trifolium subterraneum L. (Subterranean Clover), Calyces and sterile florets

Note the pale green cone of sterile florets between the bases of the calyces. These will enlarge in fruit and force the fertile florets against the peduncle, streamlining its passage into the soil.
