A Guide to the Morphology of the Diatom Frustule

After a short Introduction, Collection and Preparation of Recent Diatoms describes collection methods, separating diatoms from grit, cleaning the frustule (using hydrochloric acid, or 30% hydrogen peroxide for 2hrs, or concentrated sulphuric acid followed by potassium dichromate then hydrogen peroxide, or dried and incinerated). This is followed by Features of the Diatom Frustule which provides a glossary including 21 plates of line drawings). The second fifty page comprises a Key to Genera of Diatoms occurring in British fresh waters.
